About The Ash Wednesday Play

“The Ash Wednesday play” was commissioned by the festival in 2022 to explore a deeply personal local story that embodies our themes of place, story, and nature. Inspired by the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires in Macedon, the play reimagines the night hundreds sought refuge at the Macedon Railway Hotel, just 200 meters from our festival hub.

Drawing from survivor interviews and extensive research, the play features fictional characters that honour the shared experiences of this devastating event, allowing us to explore broader themes of community resilience and disaster response.

The production is designed to be both intimate and immersive, blending professional and community performances in an elevated reading format. Beloved actors Shane Jacobson and Pia Miranda will join community performers under the direction of Iain Sinclair.

Our initial readings were met with overwhelming support, and thanks to local funding, we’ve been able to further develop the play.

This year, we’re excited to present five performances: three with Q&A sessions featuring the cast and special guests, a relaxed performance without sound and lighting effects, and a reading-only performance.

We are aware of the sensitive nature of the content. We will be providing a breakout room for anyone who may need a moment to themselves throughout the performance with support people in attendance.
